Muky 100 | A Tribute to Muky’s Ceramics at MIC Faenza
From 10 October to 29 November 2026, celebrations for the centenary of the birth of Muky, artistic name of Wanda Berasi (1926-2022), continue at MIC Faenza with the exhibition “Omaggio alla ceramica di Muky” (A Tribute to Muky’s Ceramics), on display in the museum’s Project Room.
The solo exhibition traces the artist’s long career through ceramic works held in the MIC collection, many of which were inherited upon her death. The opening is scheduled for Friday 9 October, at 6:00 PM, with a conversation between Claudia Casali, director of MIC Faenza, and Anty Pansera, art historian.
A Journey Through Material, Form and Poetry
Muky’s artistic research began in the 1950s between Rome and Innsbruck, where she deepened her ceramic training and experimented with high-temperature modelling and firing techniques, coming into contact with the artists of Villa Massimo, including Leoncillo and Massimo Mazzacurati. In 1955 she moved to Faenza, studying at the State Art Institute for Ceramics “G. Ballardini” and beginning a long artistic partnership with sculptor Domenico Matteucci.
Her informal, gestural work of the 1950s gradually gave way, in the following decade, to more rigorous and essential forms in line with minimalist trends, often built around subtle variations of white. In later decades, Muky broadened her colour palette, giving colour a precise symbolic meaning, while also developing a parallel practice in painting and a personal form of visual poetry, engraving texts, verses and aphorisms directly onto raw white glaze.
From the 1980s and 1990s onward, her work took on an increasingly symbolic and conceptual dimension, culminating in the series “Presepi contro” (Nativity Scenes Against, 1989-2004), mixed-material assemblages addressing universal themes such as violence, war, consumerism and the longing for peace — a path she continued to explore into the new millennium.
