NOAM OFF Copa Mundial – Mexican Cinema and the World Cup in Faenza

On Wednesday 10 June, on the eve of the opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026,
the Arena Borghesi Cinema in Faenza hosts NOAM OFF Copa Mundial,
an evening weaving together Mexican cinema, film criticism and the collective anticipation
for the Football World Cup.

Programme

• 7:00 PM – Gates open with aperitivo and djset by
  Tommy from Riva.
• 9:00 PM – Film critic and lecturer Roy Menarini — professor
  of Cinema and Cultural Industry at the University of Bologna — presents The Three Amigos,
  a talk dedicated to the three Mexican filmmakers who have redefined contemporary cinema:
  Alfonso Cuarón, Alejandro González Iñárritu and Guillermo del Toro.
  The talk takes place on the occasion of the launch of the volume
  Il film nel XXI secolo (Cue Press, 2025).
• 9:45 PM – Screening of Rudo y Cursi (Carlos Cuarón,
  Mexico/USA, 2008) — its first big-screen screening in Italy.

The Film

Directed by Carlos Cuarón — Alfonso’s brother and co-writer of
Y tu mamá también — Rudo y Cursi follows Tato and Beto,
two brothers raised in a Mexican village between work on a banana plantation and bigger dreams.
One wants to become a singer, the other a footballer; it is football that eventually pulls them
to Mexico City, where fame and money put their bond to the test.

Produced by Alfonso Cuarón, Alejandro González Iñárritu and Guillermo del Toro
through Cha Cha Cha Films, the film stars
Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna. A popular comedy and social satire, it
lightly explores the contradictions of success and the fragile line between dream and illusion.

The screening, on the eve of a World Cup hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico
— the three countries at the heart of NOAM’s cinematic focus — carries a significance that goes
beyond the calendar. In an edition of NOAM dedicated to Mexico as Country in Focus,
the evening becomes an early opportunity to explore Mexican culture through film.
