The Abyss Trail: hike among sinkholes and caves in the Vena del Gesso Romagnola
The Abyss Trail, located near the Rifugio Carnè in Riolo Terme, offers a fascinating hike of about 2 hours to discover the entrances to the karstic abysses of Monte di Rontana and the numerous sinkholes that shape this striking landscape. The route is easy and suitable for everyone, allowing visitors to explore on the surface one of the most spectacular and deepest karst systems of the Vena del Gesso Romagnola. Although direct access to the caves is not allowed (reserved exclusively for expert speleologists), the trail provides a unique opportunity to learn up close about the functioning and morphology of one of the most important underground karst environments in Emilia-Romagna.
Also not to be missed are the archaeological points of interest: from the "rustic" Roman-era hut, now thought to have been a building for monitoring the extraction of lapis specularis, to the sandstone rock above the Carnè Abyss at the end of the trail, featuring prehistoric cup marks.
