Castel Bolognese, thanks to its geographical position, has always been one of the centers, since the unification of Italy, to have a railway service.
The first train passed through Castel Bolognese on September the first 1861, inauguration day of the Forlì-Bologna section of the Bologna-Ancona line. A few years later the Castel Bolognese-Ravenna line was built to connect the inland to the Adriatic port of our Province. The new line was inaugurated on 23rd August 1863. In 1938 the Bologna-Ancona line was electrified.
During the Second World War, the railway services was interrupted. The railway line and the buildings of the station were repeatedly bombed and destroyed by mines. In 1960 the Ravenna – Castel Bolognese line was electrified. The building was then rebuilt and modernized to its present format.
For a short time, from 1914 to 1933, the Castel Bolognese-Riolo Bagni railway line was in function to service that large flow of people who visited the Thermal Baths, however the service was stopped due to high management costs.
Directions: From Faenza direction Castel Bolognese, along the via Emilia, turn right in Via Umberto I at the first traffic light at Castel Bolognese. Follow the road and after a slight curve towards left, turn right into viale Cairoli. The station is at the end of the road.
