The Chiesa di Sopra preserves its ancient remains on a panoramic terrace overlooking the clay ridge that characterizes the landscape of this small village.
Only part of the perimeter wall and the bell gable remain of the structure, which has preserved its bell dated 1478, still rung today to celebrate the birth of every child from Casola. The church was dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin and was linked to the original castle of Casola, destroyed by the people of Faenza in 1216, dispersing the inhabitants, who nevertheless continued to use the building as a place of worship and burial.
The name “Chiesa di Sopra” was assigned in the 16th century to distinguish it from the new Chiesa di Sotto, dedicated to Mary Magdalene.
The church can be reached by a pleasant uphill walk from the village center.
