The "Chiesa di Sopra" (Upper Church) is located on a panoramic terrace overlooking the long clay ridge that characterizes the landscape of this small village.
From here, the view opens onto the Senio valley, offering a breathtaking vista of the hills, the calanques (badlands), the cultivated fields, and the historic center.
Of the original church structure, only a portion of the perimeter wall and the bell gable remain. Its bell, dating back to 1478, is still rung today to celebrate the birth of every child in Casola.
The church was dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin and was linked to the original Castle of Casola, which was destroyed by the people of Faenza in 1216. Although the inhabitants were dispersed, they continued to use the building as a place of worship and burial.
The name "Chiesa di Sopra" was given in the 16th century to distinguish it from the new "Chiesa di Sotto" (Lower Church) dedicated to Mary Magdalene.
The church can be reached via a beautiful uphill walk from the town center.
