Founded in 1980, the museum hosts fascinating naturalistic collections. Highlights include the ornithological collection, featuring over 2,500 taxidermied birds from regional and national fauna, and the entomological collection, which preserves more than 80,000 local and non-European insects.
The geo-paleontological section includes a fossil collection, among which are some mammals from the Monticino area of Brisighella.
The Pleistocene paleo-fauna collection, with mammals from Oriolo di Faenza, documents the species that inhabited the Faenza territory 800,000–900,000 years ago. Of particular value is the skull of the Mammuthus meridionalis.
Minerals, fossils, and speleological finds complete the collections. The speleology section, in particular, tells the story of the discipline and the numerous caves of the Parco Regionale della Vena del Gesso Romagnola, a UNESCO site for the karst phenomena in evaporites and caves of the Northern Apennines.
In the 12,000 m² botanical garden, which is freely accessible, visitors can admire over 170 plant species, including a magnificent 24-meter-tall sequoia with an intact crown.
Curiosity: The museum preserves a limestone block from the Alps with dinosaur footprints; the specimen was recovered in 1996 from the breakwater dam of Porto Corsini (Ravenna).
During temporary exhibitions, the museum rooms are also open at the following times:
Saturday: 9:30 AM - 12:00 PM / 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM
