The Pinacoteca Comunale di Faenza houses the most important collection of art in Romagna from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century.
The visit begins with Cassandra by Ercole Drei, an Art Nouveau sculpture leading to a series of Byzantine and Romanesque sculptures and inscriptions from churches in Faenza and Ravenna.
Among the medieval works, there is the Painted Cross by the Master of the Franciscan Crucifixes, a refined blend of painting and goldsmithing, and the panel Madonna with Child and Saints by Giovanni da Rimini, one of Giotto’s main followers in Romagna.
At the center of the main hall is the wooden sculpture of Saint Jerome by Donatello, surrounded by paintings by Florentine Biagio d’Antonio and Marco Palmezzano, a key figure in Renaissance painting in Romagna.
On the upper floor, the Sala Manfredi houses highly valuable works from the Faentine lordship, including the marble bust of San Giovannino by Benedetto da Maiano and two rare wedding chests by Jacopo da Faenza, with precious gold leaf carvings.
In the large Salone delle Pale d’altare, important sixteenth- and seventeenth-century works from the major churches of Faenza are displayed, reflecting the city’s vibrant artistic culture between Mannerism and Baroque.
The modern section begins with a selection of still lifes and continues with works by Felice Giani, a leading figure of Faenza’s Neoclassical period.
Works by Domenico Baccarini and members of the Baccariniano Circle depict Faenza in the international artistic context between Art Nouveau and Expressionism.
The Pinacoteca also hosts the Bianchedi Bettoli Vallunga collection, dedicated to twentieth-century Italian art, with works by Giorgio De Chirico, Alberto Savinio, Gino Severini, Carlo Carrà, Mario Sironi, Giorgio Morandi, Massimo Campigli, Filippo De Pisis, and Felice Casorati.
The museum organizes numerous guided tours, workshops for children and families, and initiatives dedicated to Faentine art.
For younger visitors, the playful path "Operazione G.I.L.D.A." is available, a digital treasure hunt accessible via a web app on smartphones.
