Rustic and very simple cookies typical of the Romagna region, usually decorated with sugar sprinkles — hence the name zucaren. They are generally enjoyed with a good glass of sweet Albana wine.
Ingredients and Preparation
- 500 g flour
- 200 g sugar
- 100 g butter
- 2 eggs
- grated lemon peel
- 1 packet baking powder
- For decoration: 1 egg, sugar sprinkles
Knead all the ingredients together until you obtain a soft, workable dough; let it rest in the refrigerator for at least half an hour.
Roll out the dough to about ½ cm thick and cut into shapes as desired, also using cookie cutters if you like.
Brush the surface of the cookies with beaten egg and decorate with sugar sprinkles (or colored sugar strands).
Bake in a hot oven at 180°C for about 10 minutes.
