The tower was rebuilt in a Renaissance style following the bombings of 1945.
Known as Porta Vecchia or Porta di Ponente after the opening of another gate on the eastern side in the 16th century, it also served as the seat of the Monte di Pietà.
In the second half of the 19th century it was demolished and replaced by an entrance flanked by two small towers. Above the large passage arch it still preserves an original 16th-century coat of arms of the Este–Gonzaga family.
